Preparation and Research
- Do your research about the stable/organization:
Check their website, social media channels, and reviews from other interns (feel free to also check out my own reports ) - Clarify whether riding skills and specific riding styles (for example, English or Western) are required.
- Ask about accommodation and meals:
will they be provided or do you need to pay for them yourself? - Write down contact persons and their details (also for emergencies).
- Check your travel documents:
ID/passport, visa if needed, vaccination records - Check your insurances:
Travel health insurance, accident insuranceEspecially for riding internships abroad, it’s worth considering taking out a travel health insurance – just in case something happens.
I personally use UKV Travel Health Insurance:
As of 2025, it costs €11.50 per year and covers trips up to 56 days – ideal for many shorter stays abroad.

Communication with the Stable/Organization
- Make sure to ask all your questions in advance:
- What does a typical daily schedule look like?
- Which exact tasks will I be responsible for?
- Do I need to bring my own riding equipment?
- Is there a minimum duration for the internship?
- How many days per week will I be working?
- Do I need a driver’s license?
- Clarify allergies, intolerances, or medical restrictions if necessary
- It’s best to have all important information (like working hours or accommodation) confirmed in writing – via email or message.
- Also plan your arrival carefully.

On Site – What Helps You During the Internship
- Be open to new tasks – also beyond riding.
- Don’t hesitate to ask questions if you’re unsure – nobody expects you to know everything right away
- Write down highlights and learnings – they’ll also be useful later for job applications
- Stay in touch with people you get along with – often new opportunities, tips, or even job offers come out of these contacts later
- Keep emergency contacts at hand
