Information
To sign up for a Tote Hose ride, riders had to call the provided mobile number on the website. SMS or WhatsApp was not possible.
At registration, each rider signed a declaration confirming that they met the necessary requirements for the ride. Payment was made in cash at registration.
Group size was up to 16 riders with 2 guides.
The timing of the mudflat ride depended on the tides.
Stable
In summer, the horses were kept on a pasture. In winter, the horses were housed in open stables.
Arrival
Upon arrival, all Fjord horses were tied up with saddles ready for the ride. Once all riders were present, the guides gave a briefing and shared important information for the ride. The guides assigned the horses. Riders could request a specific horse. Each rider’s task was to bridle the assigned horse, lead it from the tie-up area, and mount. A staff member held the horse and adjusted the stirrups. The order of the horses was determined by the staff. Friends were given the opportunity to ride one after another.

Trail Ride
The ride started directly from the stable along the prepared sandy riding paths. On the trail, we trotted for the first time. We followed the trail into the town of Cuxhaven-Duhnen. At a street crossing, we trotted. Through the town, the whole group rode until reaching the dike. We continued over the sandy beach and into the Wadden Sea. Upon arrival, the guides cinched all the horses’ saddles.
We continued at a walk until the first gallop in the Wadden Sea. We rode through the mudflats at walk and gallop until reaching Werner Forest in Cuxhaven-Sahlenburg. During the gallops in the mudflats, I felt completely free, as there were no barriers. On the forest trails, we returned to the farm at walk and trot. During the entire ride, the horses moved very close together. A distance of one horse length was considered too much.
After the ride
Back at the farm, all riders helped unsaddle, unbridle and tidy up, placing items in the designated stacks. The horses were returned according to instructions either to the pasture or to a stall. Staff cleaned and stored the equipment.
Photos
During the ride at sunset, the guides took a photo break directly in the Wadden Sea.
My Review
I enjoyed the ride. Riding in the Wadden Sea was a unique experience. Fantastic gallops and a real feeling of freedom. It was a lot of fun.
