General Information

At the Spain Tenerife Finca Estrella internship, room and board were provided free of charge. In return, interns helped out in the stables. Each week, interns worked 6 days for 7 to 9 hours per day. One full day per week was completely free. If desired, an intern could also take an additional half day off. During free time, it was possible to take trips by bus. The bus stop was 1.2 km from the stable, and the host provided a bus card. There was one fixed day off, which was not the same day as the other intern.

There were two interns on site.

Accommodation

Each intern stayed in a cozy and spacious wooden cabin. There was enough space, coat racks, wooden shelves, and a heater.

The bathroom was shared among the volunteers. Behind the larger cabin, the bathroom included running water, its own boiler, a toilet, shower, and sink. A hairdryer was provided.

The house offered free Wi-Fi, but the signal did not reach the cabins.

Working Day

The workday started at 7:30 a.m. with the following tasks:

·         Halter the horses
·         Clean the stables
·         Tie up the horses and distribute breakfast
·         Pick out hooves and comb tails
·         Spread straw in the stables
·         Sweep the pathways

The morning routine ended by 9:30 a.m., followed by a breakfast break. Work resumed at 10:00 a.m. with these tasks:

·         Clean the stables
·         Release horses
·         Prepare and clean grooming boxes
·         Check saddles
·         Wash feed buckets
·         Keep everything tidy

From 11:00 a.m., guests arrived, and the tasks continued:

Rides started at 12:00 p.m. Usually, interns could choose whether to ride or have some free time. The rides lasted between 1.5 and 7 hours, mostly around 3 hours. As backup guides, interns sometimes rode along. For 1.5-hour rides, interns occasionally accompanied guests on foot.

After the ride, tasks included:

·         Remove bridles and saddles, and feed the horses
·         Cool the horses’ legs
·         Wash the horses’ backs with warm water

The midday break followed. Work resumed at 5:30 p.m. with haltering horses, cleaning stables, tying horses, distributing feed, wetting evening feed, and emptying water buckets. Break until 8:00 p.m.

At 8:00 p.m., feed buckets were collected and cleaned, stables were cleaned again, and the horses were released for the end of the day.

Horses

There were 12 horses and 2 ponies, living in two herds in two open stables with shelters. They always had water available and received four meals a day.

My Review

I really enjoyed the internship. We made sure the horses were well cared for, rode almost every day and the host made sure we were comfortable as well. The horses were perfectly looked after.
