Information

On Horseback Fourka is a small operation with 4 riding horses (as of 08/2024). In high season, the rides take place at the beach near the Posidi Lighthouse, as the beach there is much wider. Due to the heat, rides ONLY take place early in the morning or late in the evening.

Guests could borrow helmets free of charge. All rides were done in Western saddles.

Most rides were organized as private tours. Mixed groups were rare, which allowed the guide to focus on each rider individually.

Stable

In the morning, the owner transported the 4 horses and all tack by trailer to a shady spot under the trees near Posidi Lighthouse. There, the horses were tied on 10-meter ropes, with water buckets and hay available. After the evening rides, the owner transported them back to Fourka.

Arrival

When I arrived, the staff was still preparing the horses. One staff member greeted me and I had to sign a waiver. Once that was done, I was given a riding helmet. A staff member brought my horse over and helped me mount. I was asked to ride a short distance ahead while the guide got ready and mounted herself. Then our ride began.

Trail Ride

The ride started right on the sandy paths beneath the trees. We turned left, passed the small white lighthouse, and continued along the camp area. At suitable spots, we added short stretches of trot.

Whenever a horse dropped manure, the guide dismounted and picked it up with a dustpan, which she carried in a plastic bag attached to her saddle with a carabiner. The trail led us through a small patch of woods, over the dunes, and out onto Possidi Beach. Turning left, we followed the shoreline toward the tip of the peninsula. On the right, the sea was rough and choppy, while the left-hand side was calm and glassy. Along the way we did a short trot, but mostly kept a relaxed walk.

At the tip, we turned around to the calm side and followed the beach toward a parking lot. Here, we picked up a gallop and felt the fresh sea breeze. After passing the parking lot and camp area, we looped around, adding several trot stretches.

Back at the parking lot, we turned into the dunes and crossed to the other side of the beach, where we did some more trot work. Finally, we turned right, passed back through the dunes, the camp area, and the lighthouse, making one last loop before returning to our starting point.

After the ride

Back at the meeting point, a staff member came to hold my horse and showed me how to dismount. He led the horse back to its shady place while a colleague untacked. Once that was finished, the staff member came over, sent me the photos, and collected the payment for the ride.

Photos

There was a photo stop at the very tip of the beach. The guide took the pictures with her own phone and sent them afterward via AirDrop or WhatsApp.

My Review

I really enjoyed the ride. Everything was relaxed and well organized. I especially liked the small groups, which made the whole experience feel more personal.
