General Information
This report refers to an internship at Germany Amrum Reiterhof Andresen in WINTERTIME! In summer, typical workdays, and opening hours of shops and restaurants differ.
Included in this internship at no cost:
· Accommodation
· Bread rolls and bread from the bakery
· Bicycle
· Tap water
It was a paid internship. Working hours were 7 hours per day, 6 days a week. Every 7th day was a free day for excursions. Work hours and a 2-hour lunch break were always observed.
The intern had to provide her own meals. The local Edeka supermarket was a 5-minute walk away.
Important: The Edeka takes a lunch break from 12:30–14:30 and closes at 6:00 p.m. On Saturdays, it is open only until 12:30. (As of 12/23 for WINTERTIME)
Accommodation
There were three basement apartments in one house, and one was reserved for an intern. The apartment was a 5-minute walk from the stable. A bicycle was provided for the intern.
The apartment included a bathroom with walk-in shower, toilet, and sink, and a bedroom with a large bed and wardrobe. There was a small kitchen with microwave, kettle, hot plate, fridge with freezer, dishes, and cabinets with enough storage space. The hosts could provide a small oven about the size of a microwave. A small table with two chairs was used for dining. The living room had two comfortable chairs for relaxing, two coffee tables, a lamp, a sideboard with a TV, and a wardrobe.
Before departure, the apartment had to be thoroughly cleaned. Radiator covers had to be removed for cleaning. Shelves, cabinets, and tables were not to be forgotten. In the bathroom, the plugs had to be removed and cleaned.
Important: Bed linen, dish towels, and hand towels must be brought by the intern!
The house had free Wi-Fi and the password could be requested via WhatsApp.
There was a second accommodation shared by two interns. This was a small apartment with separate bedrooms, shared bathroom, and shared kitchen. The bedrooms were accessed via a steep staircase with extra-wide steps.
Meals
The intern was responsible for her own meals. Breakfast could be had until 7:45 a.m. before starting work. Lunch could be prepared and eaten from 12:00 p.m., and dinner was possible from 5:00 p.m.
There were also restaurants nearby. The cheapest one open at that time was “Rialto” with continuous opening hours.
Working Day
The workday started at 8:00 a.m. and included the following tasks::
· Feeding the horses
· Lunging Pony Olaf, horse Paul, and possibly a third pony/horse, and taking them for a small ride if needed
· Sometimes riding in the arena, going on a trail ride, or giving lunging lessons (depending on weather)
· Returning horses to the paddock
· Mucking out stalls, adding fresh straw, checking and filling water troughs, preparing hay for the evening and the next morning
· Sweeping stable aisles and yard
· Getting horses ready for riding lessons
After lunch from 12:00–2:00 p.m., work continued with::
· Preparing horses and ponies with riding students (grooming, saddling, bridling)
· Mostly giving riding and/or lunging lessons
· Caring for horses after work

While riding, I wore the Royal Horsemen riding leggings – they were extremely comfortable and pleasant to wear.

Horses
Most horses were continuously on different paddocks. The stable had 17 boxes. In winter, boxes were occupied overnight by horses and foals, and during the day they went to the paddock.
My Review
I enjoyed the internship. From the stable, we could see the sea, 700 meters away, every day. Everyone helped with the work so we could go on break or finish on time. The bicycle was very useful.
Summary, Tips, and Info
- Bring pillowcases, bed sheets, hand and dish towels
- Note Edeka opening hours – best to shop right after work or on a free day
- Bring shoes that are waterproof and can get dirty (ideally riding boots)
