Information
By Get Your Guide* I could book and pay the Viking Horses trail ride. In Reykjavik, the transfer picked us up and we drove 15 minutes by car from the city center to the stable.
The group size was a maximum of 10 riders plus two guides.
Stable
The horses were in their stalls or on the paddock. There were also more horses kept on a winter pasture located further away.
Arrival
When we arrived, we were allowed to sit at a table and were offered coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. On the table was a waiver form that we had to sign. During this time, the staff prepared the horses for the ride.
Once the horses were ready outside on a paddock, the guests were given helmets. On the paddock, a guide gave an introduction with all the important information to ensure the riders felt safe.
The guide asked about the riders’ experience and assigned the horses. We were allowed to approach the horses but had to wait until a team member came to tighten the girth, hold the horse, and adjust the stirrups. The guides mounted last, and the riders could decide the order themselves. Then the trail ride began.

My Trail Ride Diary
Your personal companion for your ride trips– with plenty of space for photos and notes!
Trail Ride
The ride started directly at the stable and led us through hilly terrain and the “Hólsmheiði Forest.” To warm up, we rode at a walk for a while. In the forest, we had two opportunities to enjoy the “tölt.” The path took us under a busy road bridge, but the horses stayed calm and relaxed. Shortly after, we crossed a bridge over a quiet river. We continued through the “Red Stone Lava Rock Area,” a beautiful region where we rode a round trail at a relaxed walk to take in the scenery. Before reaching the bridges again, we had one more chance to experience the tölt. Afterwards, we returned through the hilly terrain back to the stable. In total, we enjoyed the tölt three times, but we did not canter on this ride.
After the ride
Back at the stable, everyone dismounted. We waited until a staff member came to remove the saddles. The saddle was handed to the rider, who carried it inside the stable where another staff member received it. Out on the paddock, the horses were given their grain feed in buckets.
Riders were offered free coffee, tea, or hot chocolate to warm up.
Photos
There was a photo stop at a beautiful spot with a lava rock. It resembled the “Pride Rock” from"The Lion King“ (- available on DVD, BluRay, 4K, or digital at Amazon*). There was a photo stop at a beautiful spot with a small volcano in the background. The guide dismounted and took the guest’s phone to take pictures. Each guest received their photos directly on their phone.
My Review
I really enjoyed the ride. It was a small group. The area was very beautiful. The horses were well taken care of and tölt was a lot of fun. I also appreciated the free transfer and the warm drinks before and after the ride.
