What can you expect on a two-hour trail ride for advanced riders at Rancho Grande? Here you’ll find all important information about the schedule, the ride, whether photos are taken, and my review.

Information

A transfer picked up the guests from the hotel. At some hotels, it was possible to book and pay for the ride directly.

By Rancho Grande
an employee mentioned that a full group could include up to 70 riders plus 14 guides.

Arrival

When all riders arrived at the yard, they chose a helmet. Several guides divided the riders into “language groups” so that everyone could understand the instructions. The groups were: German, Spanish, and English. During the briefing, staff explained that all riders would start as one large group and be split during the ride.

More than 30 horses were tied up, saddled, and bridled, waiting for the riders at hitching posts. Riders were grouped according to experience and discussed their riding levels. Each rider was assigned a horse.

At the start, everyone simply followed a horse. No specific horse order was established at first. A guide rode with the group while other guides ran alongside to adjust stirrups for some riders. The guides then returned to the yard, mounted their own horses, and took a shortcut to catch up with the group. To reach the group faster, they galloped toward them.

Trail Ride

During the walk, the guides changed the horse order. To do this, they took the reins from the rider and positioned the horse correctly. The horses were very close together with their ears back. The group included 30 riders plus guides.

When the first trot was signaled, the group split. The trotters and canterers went together while the walkers continued at a slower pace. The canterers first had to “prove themselves” to join the canter group. After the first trot, some riders still needed stirrup adjustments, which the guide did while riding side by side. Some horses resisted, which delayed the adjustments.

At the first canter stretch, the group split again, and only four of us remained together. We rode through beautiful terrain with sandy paths at a walk and occasional canters. We rode alongside a river. Riding on the beach was not possible, but some paths offered views of the sea. Trotting in the canter group only happened for photos.

After the ride

Back at the stable, riders dismounted. Staff took several horses at once, saddled, and washed them.

Drinks were available for purchase at the bar.

The transfer brought the guests back to their hotel.

Photos

On request, the guide took pictures of the rider. She used the guest’s phone and rode alongside the group to capture the shots.

During the ride, there was also a designated photo spot where a photographer took action shots. These photos were sold at the stable.

My Review

The area for the ride is beautiful. Lovely sandy paths, the option to ride along the river, and great views of the sea.
