Information
By Viator* I booked and paid for the ride. At Shepherd’s Fold Stables, all rides were private. There were no groups with strangers. The guide could cater to individual wishes. When booking, the owner asked about the rider’s experience.
Stable
The stable is located outside Johannesburg, surrounded by fields. The horses grazed in the paddock. Each horse had its own stall. Overnight, the horses stayed in the stalls, and in the morning the staff brought them out to the paddock.
The horses only needed to work once per day. The rest of the time, they wore fly masks in the paddock.
Arrival
Upon arrival, the staff prepared the horse in the stall. The bridle was only put on once the rider had finished filling out forms (contact information, safety regulations). The rider mounted using a mounting block. One staff member held the horse. Another staff member, who led the ride, joined us.

My Trail Ride Diary
Your personal companion for your ride trips– with plenty of space for photos and notes!
Trail Ride
The ride started directly from the farm. The path led along a road, passing fenced properties. This offered the first opportunity to trot. Once we reached the rolling meadows, the first gallop followed. From the meadow, there was a beautiful view over the surrounding area. We rode across the meadow to a road and followed it past properties fenced with electric fences. At one point, we rode close to an electric fence. We followed the road until we reached a field section. Back on the meadow, the next gallop began. We went down a hill at a walk. At the bottom, we made a 180-degree turn. Then we galloped up the hill again. We rode the same path back. In total, we galloped four times during the ride.
After the ride
Right in front of the stable, the rider dismounted. The rider helped with unsaddling and removing the bridle. A staff member took the horse back to the paddock.
Photos
During the ride, a photo break was arranged individually. Right by the stable, in front of a wooden structure, there was an opportunity for photos. A staff member accompanied the rider and took pictures with the rider’s phone.
My Review
I enjoyed the ride. The views from the rolling meadows were beautiful. The horses were in excellent condition, and the owner accommodated personal wishes. It was great that the rides were private and not in mixed groups.
